Tata Rallis Atrataf is a selective, pre-emergence and early post-emergence herbicide formulated as Atrazine 50% WP (Wettable Powder). It belongs to the 1,3,5-triazine chemical family and works by inhibiting Photosystem II (PSII) in photosynthetic electron transport.
Germinating weeds absorb the chemical predominantly through their root systems and shoots. Once translocated upward to the foliage, it shuts down chlorophyll energy production, resulting in chlorosis, tissue starvation, and weed death.
Critical Crop Selectivity & Warning
Agronomic Warning on Broad Crop Use:
Atrazine is a highly crop-specific selective herbicide. It is safe only for crops capable of enzymatically breaking down and detoxifying Atrazine (primarily via Glutathione S-Transferase / GST).
Approved / Tolerant Crops: Maize (Corn), Sugarcane, and Sorghum (Jowar).
Strictly Prohibited / Highly Sensitive: Vegetable crops (Solanaceous, cucurbits, leafy greens, legumes) and Fruit/Horticultural crops. Applying Atrataf directly to vegetables, pulses, or fruit orchards will cause severe phytotoxicity, chlorosis, stunting, or total crop loss. In orchards, it is occasionally utilized only in strictly controlled non-crop industrial borders or fallows with directed shielded ground-sprays, avoiding root zones and drift.
Target Weeds & Dosage Chart (Tolerant Field Crops)
Crop | Target Weeds | Dosage per Liter | Dosage per Acre (in 150–200 L water) | Application Timing |
Maize (Corn) | Trianthema monogyna (Carpet weed), Amaranthus spp., Digitaria, Echinochloa, Eleusine | 2.5 – 4.0 g | 400 – 800 g (use lower dose in light/sandy soil, higher in heavy clay) | Pre-emergence: 0 to 3 days after sowing (DAS), before weed emergence |
Sugarcane | Portulaca oleracea, Digera, broadleaf annuals, and early-stage grasses | 3.0 – 5.0 g | 600 – 1000 g (can go up to 1.6 kg/acre on heavy soils) | Pre-emergence: Prior to weed emergence, immediately after planting or first irrigation |
Sorghum (Jowar) | Annual grasses, carpet weed, pigweed | 2.5 – 3.5 g | 400 – 600 g | Pre-emergence: Within 2–3 days after sowing |
Best Time and Conditions to Spray
Soil Moisture is Mandatory: Pre-emergence herbicides require adequate moisture in the topsoil to dissolve into the soil solution and form an active chemical barrier. Spray onto moist soil or irrigate lightly after field preparation.
Application Window: Apply strictly 0–3 days after sowing, before weed seeds break the soil surface. Once weeds pass the 2–3 true leaf stage, control efficacy drops dramatically.
Nozzle Selection: Use a flat-fan or flood-jet nozzle. Do not use hollow-cone nozzles (which are meant for foliar insecticides/fungicides). Maintain uniform boom height to create a smooth, continuous blanket over the soil surface.
Soil Disturbance: Do not run inter-cultivation or hoeing implements through the treated soil bed for 3–4 weeks after spraying, as breaking the soil crust breaks the chemical weed barrier.
Key Safety Precautions
Crop Rotation & Soil Residue: Atrazine has soil persistence (half-life ranging from weeks to several months depending on soil pH and organic matter). Avoid planting sensitive rotational crops (such as chickpea, soybean, mustard, or vegetable seedlings) immediately following an Atrazine-treated season without adequate soil flushing and deep plowing.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear chemical-resistant gloves, a filtration mask, eye protection/goggles, and full-sleeved protective clothing during mixing and field spraying.
Slurry Preparation: As a wettable powder, premix Atrataf into a smooth paste/slurry in a separate bucket using clean water before pouring it into the sprayer tank to ensure continuous suspension without clogging nozzles.
Drift Control: Prevent spray drift toward adjacent vegetable patches, orchards, or water bodies. Do not spray during windy periods.
Aquatic Safety & Leaching: Atrazine is mobile in sandy soils with low organic matter. Avoid over-application near irrigation wells, open ponds, or shallow water tables to prevent ground and surface water contamination.
