FMC Chemdoot is a modern, biological-derivative insecticide formulated as Emamectin Benzoate 5% SG (Soluble Granules). Derived from the soil actinomycete Streptomyces avermitilis, it belongs to the Avermectin chemical family (IRAC Group 6). It is engineered specifically to target damaging chewing, biting, and boring lepidopteran caterpillars, as well as select micro-pests like thrips.
Mode of Action: Neuro-Muscular Paralysis
Glutamate-Gated Chloride Channel Activation: Emamectin Benzoate binds with high affinity to glutamate-gated chloride channels in the insect’s peripheral nervous system.
Rapid Feeding Cessation: This binding stimulates an irreversible flow of chloride ions into nerve and muscle cells, blocking neurotransmission. Exposed larvae suffer rapid, irreversible paralysis and
stop feeding within 2 to 4 hours, preventing crop tissue loss. Complete pest mortality typically occurs within 48 to 72 hours.
Translaminar Movement: Chemdoot rapidly penetrates leaf cuticles via translaminar action, forming a reservoir of active ingredient within the leaf mesophyll. This protects it from ultraviolet degradation and wash-off while targeting pests feeding on the underside of foliage or hidden leaf layers.
Crop Spectrum, Target Pests & Recommended Dosage
The water-soluble granule (SG) formulation dissolves cleanly in water without leaving gritty residue or clogging spray nozzles.
Crop Category | Representative Crops | Target Pests | Dosage per Liter | Dosage per Acre (in 150–200 L water) | Application Remarks |
Vegetable Crops | Chilli, Tomato, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Brinjal, Okra | Fruit borer (Helicoverpa), Diamondback Moth (DBM), Shoot & fruit borer, Spodoptera (Tobacco caterpillar), Thrips | 0.4 – 0.5 g | 80 – 100 g | Spray at early vegetative or flowering stages upon observing early larval instars |
Commercial & Field Crops | Cotton, Maize, Soybean, Chickpea, Pigeonpea (Red gram) | Bollworms (American, Spotted, Pink), Fall Armyworm (FAW), Pod borer (Helicoverpa armigera), Semiloopers | 0.5 – 0.6 g | 100 – 120 g | In maize, direct spray into the whorls for Fall Armyworm; in pulses, apply at flower bud initiation |
Fruit & Plantation Crops | Grapes, Pomegranate, Citrus, Tea | Berry borer, Fruit borer, Leafminers, Thrips, Flush caterpillars | 0.4 – 0.5 g | 80 – 100 g (adjust water for larger tree canopies) | Apply during vegetative flushes, post-fruit set, or berry development stages |
Optimal Spray Timing and Application Guidelines
Target Early Larval Instars: Apply at the early instar stages (1st to 2nd instar) or immediately around egg-hatching. Managing caterpillars before they bore inside pods, fruits, or bolls ensures maximum efficacy.
Time of Day: Spray during late afternoon or evening (after 4:00 PM). Sunlight degrades surface deposits, and most target caterpillars are crepuscular or nocturnal feeders that become active as temperatures drop.
Thorough Canopy Coverage: Use a knapsack or motorized sprayer fitted with a hollow-cone nozzle. Ensure a fine mist reaches the growing tips, flower buds, undersides of leaves, and developing fruit.
Rainfastness: Thanks to quick translaminar penetration into leaf tissues, Chemdoot becomes rainfast within 2 to 3 hours after application.
Key Safety & Handling Precautions
Pollinator Protection (Honeybees): Emamectin Benzoate is toxic to honeybees upon direct contact. Avoid spraying during peak daylight hours when bees are actively foraging in flowering crops. Apply in the late evening when pollinator activity has subsided.
Sericulture Hazard: Extremely toxic to silkworms. Do not apply near mulberry plantations or silkworm rearing sheds, and prevent any spray drift toward mulberry host plants.
Aquatic Safety: Highly toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates. Avoid spraying near farm ponds, irrigation canals, or open wells, and never clean spray equipment in natural waterways.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear chemical-resistant rubber gloves, a protective face mask/dust respirator, safety goggles, and full-sleeved protective clothing during measuring, mixing, and application.
