Syngenta Chess is a highly specialized, world-class systemic insecticide engineered specifically to target and eliminate destructive sap-sucking pests. It is widely celebrated by farmers as the ultimate specialist for controlling Brown Plant Hopper (BPH) in paddy crops, effectively preventing catastrophic "hopper burn".

Technical Overview

  • Active Ingredient: Pymetrozine (50% WG).

  • Formulation: WG (Water Dispersible Granules) — a dust-free, easy-dissolving granular formulation.

  • Mode of Action (Chordotonal Organ Modulator): Chess features a unique 3-way systemic and translaminar action. The moment a pest ingests or comes into contact with the chemical, it paralyzes their mouthparts (stylet) and legs.

  • The "Starvation" Effect: Within 1 hour of application, the pests permanently lose the ability to pierce the plant and suck sap. Although they may remain visible on the plant for 2 to 4 days, they cannot feed, cause no further damage, and ultimately die of starvation.

Key Benefits

  • Immediate Crop Protection: Halts crop feeding damage inside of an hour, instantly breaking the cycle of yield loss.

  • Suppresses Reproduction: It stops adult pests from laying further eggs, putting an end to future population spikes.

  • Halts Disease Transmission: By rapidly blocking the feeding mechanism, it stops hoppers from transmitting devastating viral plant diseases like Grassy Stunt and Ragged Stunt viruses.

  • IPM Friendly & Safe for Beneficials: It selectively targets sucking pests while remaining highly safe for predatory spiders and beneficial insects that naturally hunt pests.

  • Excellent Rainfastness: The systemic granules penetrate the leaf rapidly, making the application safe from being washed away by rain just 2 hours after spraying.

Crop-Specific Uses & Dosages

For row crops, dissolve the product and apply uniformly using 150 to 200 Litres of water per acre.

Application Best Practices for Maximum Efficacy

  • Target the Canopy Base (Crucial for Paddy): Brown Plant Hoppers primarily live and breed at the very bottom of the rice stalks (the culm). Do not just spray the top leaves; direct your spray nozzle downward into the lower canopy base to ensure the chemical reaches the pest zone.

  • Prophylactic & Early Timing: Apply at the Economic Threshold Level (ETL)—typically when you count 5 to 10 hoppers per hill. Spraying early prevents the population from exploding into "hopper burn".

  • Aquatic Warning: Pymetrozine is toxic to aquatic life. Avoid using Chess in fields where integrated paddy-fish farming is practiced, and ensure there is no chemical drift into nearby fish ponds.
