FMC Eltra® is a specialized, selective systemic insecticide formulated as Pymetrozine 50% WG (Water-Dispersible Granule). It is internationally celebrated as a breakthrough solution for managing persistent, sap-sucking insect pests—particularly plant hoppers, aphids, and whiteflies. Featuring a unique anti-feedant mode of action, FMC Eltra causes pests to permanently stop feeding within an hour of contact or ingestion, safeguarding crops against direct sap loss and damaging viral disease transmission.
Technical Profile & Mode of Action
Chemical Group: Pyridine Azomethine (IRAC Group 9B — Chordotonal Organ TRPV Channel Modulators).
Active Ingredient: Pymetrozine 50% WG.
Target Mechanism:
Immediate Feeding Cessation: Affects the insect's nervous system controlling the mouthparts (stylet). Within 15 to 60 minutes, the insect's stylet becomes paralyzed, permanently preventing it from sucking plant sap.
Irreversible Starvation: Because insects can no longer insert their stylets to feed, they starve to death over the course of 2 to 4 days.
Viral Transmission Blocker: By immediately halting the insertion of stylets, Eltra prevents hoppers and aphids from transmitting viral pathogens (such as grassy stunt, ragged stunt, and mosaic viruses).
Systemic & Translaminar Mobility: Rapidly absorbed by foliage and translocated both upward (acropetally) and downward (basipetally), ensuring whole-plant coverage and reaching pests hidden deep within dense crop canopies.
Crop Usage & Spectrum of Pest Control
Commercial & Cereal Crops (Paddy / Rice, Cotton, Sugarcane):
Target Pests: Brown Plant Hopper (BPH), White-Backed Plant Hopper (WBPH), Green Leafhopper (GLH), and Aphids.
Benefits: Prevents hopper burn, premature lodging, and severe grain shriveling in paddy; protects squares and young bolls in cotton.
Vegetable Crops (Tomato, Chilli, Capsicum, Okra, Cucurbits, Cabbage):
Target Pests: Aphids, Whiteflies, and Jassids.
Benefits: Halts the spread of Leaf Curl Virus and other viral complexes carried by sucking pests, keeping leaves flat and actively photosynthesizing.
Fruit & Plantation Crops (Mango, Grapes, Citrus, Pomegranate):
Target Pests: Mango hoppers, mealybug nymphs, and aphids.
Benefits: Prevents honeydew secretion and associated black sooty mold fungus on tender shoots, blossoms, and developing fruits.
Horticulture & Floriculture (Roses, Chrysanthemum, Marigold):
Target Pests: Aphids, thrips nymphs, and whitefly colonies.
Recommended Dosage & Mixing Guidelines
Application Method | Target Crops | Recommended Dosage | Water Volume |
|---|---|---|---|
Knapsack Sprayer (Manual / Battery) | Vegetables & Horticulture | 10 g to 12 g per 15-liter pump (approx. 0.6 g – 0.8 g per liter of water) | As per canopy density |
Broad Field Foliar Spray | Paddy (Rice), Cotton, Field Crops | 120 g to 150 g per acre (approx. 300 g per hectare) | 150 – 200 Liters per acre |
Best Time to Spray
Economic Threshold Window: Initiate application at the first visual detection of nymphs or adults (e.g., 5–10 hoppers per hill in paddy, or early aphid colonies on vegetable leaf undersides). Controlling the initial generation prevents severe population explosions.
Spray Technique in Paddy: Brown plant hoppers typically colonize the base/stem region of the paddy crop. Ensure the spray nozzle is directed down toward the base and lower canopy rather than merely misting the top leaves.
Time of Day: Spray during the early morning (before 9:30 AM) or late afternoon (after 4:00 PM) to avoid extreme mid-day heat and rapid droplet evaporation.
Weather Factors: Apply during calm wind conditions. Ensure rain-free conditions for at least 2–3 hours following application to allow thorough systemic absorption.
Safety Precautions & Handling
Personal Protection (PPE): Wear full-sleeved protective clothing, rubber gloves, and a dust/face mask while measuring, mixing the granules, and spraying.
Pre-Mix Preparation: Dissolve the required quantity of water-dispersible granules (WG) in a bucket with 2–3 liters of clean water first to create a uniform slurry. Pour this mixture into the spray tank filled halfway with clean water, agitate well, and top up with the remaining water.
