Tata Rallis Takumi / Kakuna (commonly marketed as Novaluron 5.25% + Emamectin Benzoate 0.9% w/w SC) is a dual-action, broad-spectrum insecticide formulated as a Suspension Concentrate (SC). It is engineered for the control of chewing, biting, and boring lepidopteran caterpillars, leafminers, and select sucking pests.
Dual Mode of Action
Novaluron (Insect Growth Regulator - IGR / Benzoylurea, IRAC Group 15):
Acts as a chitin synthesis inhibitor. It targets the molting process of insect larvae, preventing them from synthesizing a new cuticle during ecdysis, which leads to larval rupture and mortality. It also exhibits ovicidal activity (killing unhatched eggs) and reduces reproductive viability in adult females.
Emamectin Benzoate (Avermectin, IRAC Group 6):
Acts on the insect’s peripheral and central nervous systems by activating glutamate-gated chloride channels. This causes an irreversible influx of chloride ions into nerve cells, resulting in paralysis, immediate cessation of feeding (within 2–4 hours), and death within 48–72 hours.
The combination delivers rapid anti-feeding knockdown via Emamectin along with extended residual control and egg-kill via Novaluron.
Crop Spectrum, Target Pests & Recommended Dosage
The formulation possesses translaminar action, allowing the active ingredients to penetrate into leaf tissue to target hidden larvae, leafminers, and borer stages.
Crop Category | Representative Crops | Target Pests | Dosage per Liter | Dosage per Acre (in 150–200 L water) |
Vegetable Crops | Chilli, Tomato, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Brinjal, Okra | Fruit borer (Helicoverpa), Diamondback Moth (DBM), Spodoptera (Prodenia), Shoot & fruit borer | 1.5 – 2.0 ml | 300 – 400 ml |
Commercial & Field Crops | Cotton, Soybean, Chickpea/Pigeonpea, Maize, Groundnut | American bollworm, Spotted bollworm, Spodoptera litura, Semilooper, Fall Armyworm (FAW), Pod borer | 1.5 – 2.0 ml | 350 – 400 ml |
Fruit & Horticulture Crops | Pomegranate, Grapes, Citrus, Guava, Watermelon | Fruit borer, Caterpillar complex, Leafminer, Berry moth | 1.5 – 2.0 ml | 300 – 400 ml |
Optimal Spray Timing and Application Guidelines
Target Pest Window: Apply at the early instar larval stage (1st to 3rd instar) or right at egg hatching/early infestation. Managing younger larvae maximizes the chitin-inhibiting efficiency of Novaluron before caterpillars bore into fruits, squares, or stems.
Time of Day: Spray during early morning (before 10:00 AM) or late afternoon/evening (after 4:30 PM). Lepidopteran caterpillars are primarily nocturnal or crepuscular feeders and emerge onto outer canopy leaves as the sun drops.
Nozzle & Coverage: Use a hollow-cone nozzle or high-pressure power sprayer with a fine mist. Target thorough coverage across all vegetative terminals, undersides of leaves, flower buds, and developing pods/fruits where pests hide.
Rainfastness: Thanks to its SC formulation and translaminar uptake, the chemical becomes rainfast within 2 to 3 hours once dried onto foliage.
Key Safety & Handling Precautions
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear chemical-resistant nitrile gloves, a protective face mask/respirator, safety goggles, and full-sleeved protective clothing during mixing and application.
Pollinator Protection: Highly toxic to bees on direct contact. Avoid spraying during peak bloom when honeybees and wild pollinators are actively foraging in the field. If spraying during flowering is necessary, apply late in the evening after foraging has ceased.
Aquatic Safety: Toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates. Do not apply near irrigation channels, ponds, open wells, or farm water tanks, and never wash equipment in natural water sources.
Tank Mixing: Compatible with most neutral to slightly acidic fungicides and biostimulants. Avoid tank-mixing with strong alkaline products (such as lime sulfur or copper-based mixtures). Always conduct a small jar-test prior to tank mixing.
Storage & Disposal: Keep stored in the original container tightly capped in a cool, dry, well-ventilated location away from children, livestock, and food grains. Triple-rinse empty bottles, puncture them, and dispose of them through approved agricultural waste methods.
Pre-Harvest Interval (PHI): Maintain a waiting period of roughly 7 to 14 days between the final application and crop harvest, depending on specific crop guidelines.
