FMC Talstar Plus is a broad-spectrum, dual-action pre-mix insecticide formulated as Bifenthrin 8% + Clothianidin 10% w/w SC (Suspension Concentrate). Combining a non-systemic synthetic pyrethroid with a neonicotinoid, it provides immediate contact and stomach knockdown along with systemic residual protection against both sap-sucking pests and foliar/chewing insects.

Dual Mode of Action

  • Bifenthrin 8% (Pyrethroid - IRAC Group 3A):

Acts on the voltage-gated sodium channels in the insect nerve membranes. It causes repetitive nerve discharges, membrane depolarization, and rapid paralysis. It provides quick knockdown through contact and ingestion, repels pests, and suppresses mite populations.

  • Clothianidin 10% (Neonicotinoid - IRAC Group 4A):

Acts as an agonist on postsynaptic nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) in the central nervous system. It exhibits xylem-systemic and translaminar activity, translocating through plant tissues to protect untreated flushes and foliage while terminating sap-sucking pests.

This combination manages pests through two distinct target sites, controlling complex pest infestations that involve simultaneous sucking and chewing insects.

Optimal Spray Timing and Application Guidelines

  • Target Pest Timing: Apply at the early onset of infestation (at the Economic Threshold Level) when nymph colonies or first-generation caterpillars appear, before whiteflies transmit viruses or hoppers cause foliage burn.

  • Canopy & Stem Coverage: Use a knapsack or tractor-mounted sprayer fitted with a hollow-cone nozzle. For rice hoppers and whiteflies, target the lower third of the canopy and leaf undersides.

  • Time of Day: Spray during early morning (before 10:00 AM) or late evening (after 4:30 PM). This limits droplet evaporation and reduces direct exposure to day-active pollinators.

  • Rainfastness: Thanks to Bifenthrin's cuticular binding and Clothianidin's systemic movement, the SC formulation becomes rainfast within 2 to 3 hours under dry foliage conditions.

Key Safety & Handling Precautions

  • Pollinator Protection (Honeybees): Highly toxic to honeybees via both active ingredients. Do not spray during full bloom or when bees are actively foraging in the field. Spraying post-sunset reduces direct pollinator contact.

  • Aquatic Toxicity: Bifenthrin is toxic to fish and aquatic life. Maintain a protective buffer away from farm ponds, irrigation canals, and streams. Never clean sprayers or dispose of washings in natural water channels.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear chemical-resistant nitrile gloves, a protective face mask/respirator, safety goggles, and full-coverage work clothing. Avoid skin contact, as synthetic pyrethroids can cause transient facial tingling (paresthesia).
