Bayer Velum Prime is a specialized, innovative nematicide and fungicide formulated as a Suspension Concentrate (SC) containing Fluopyram 34.48% w/w (equivalent to 400 g/L). It belongs to the SDHI (Succinate Dehydrogenase Inhibitor) chemical class.
Velum Prime is engineered to protect root systems from destructive plant-parasitic nematodes (such as root-knot nematodes) while providing supplementary defense against early fungal diseases. It works by disrupting the cellular respiration and energy production of target nematodes, rapidly immobilizing them and protecting root architecture. This results in enhanced root health, superior nutrient uptake, and improved overall crop establishment and vigor.
Important Clarification on Application Method
Primary Registered Use: Unlike standard foliar sprays, Velum Prime is primarily applied via soil drenching, drip irrigation (chemigation), or furrow application so that the active ingredient reaches the root zone where nematodes reside.
Note on Broad Crop Categories: While it is registered and highly effective across a wide range of commercial, vegetable, fruit, and horticultural crops (such as tomatoes, cucurbits, bananas, and potatoes), it is not designed or labeled as a standard leaf spray for aerial pest control.
Crop Usage & Dosage Table
Crop Category / Name | Target Pests / Pathogens | Application Method | Recommended Dosage per Acre | Water Volume / Application Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Tomato & Brinjal (Vegetable Crops) | Root-Knot Nematodes | Drip Irrigation / Soil Drench | 200 to 250 ml / acre | Applied through drip system or drenched near the root zone. |
Cucurbits / Cucumber (Vegetable / Horticulture) | Root-Knot Nematodes | Drip Irrigation / Soil Drench | 200 to 250 ml / acre | Apply early in the crop cycle for optimal root protection. |
Banana & Papaya (Fruit / Horticulture) | Burrowing & Root-Knot Nematodes | Drip Irrigation / Soil Drench | 250 to 300 ml / acre | Applied around the root mat / basin. |
Potatoes (Commercial / Tuber Crop) | Cyst & Root-Knot Nematodes | In-Furrow Spray at Planting | 250 to 300 ml / acre | Sprayed directly into the planting furrow. |
Good Time to Apply / Handle
Timing: Best applied at or immediately after planting / transplanting, or at the very early stages of root development before heavy nematode galls and root damage establish.
Soil Conditions: Ensure the soil has adequate moisture before application. Applying through drip irrigation works best when the soil is pre-watered so the product moves uniformly into the root zone.
Avoid Foliar Spraying: Do not apply Velum Prime as an open canopy foliar spray, as its primary target is the underground root system.
Safety Precautions to be Taken
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear rubber gloves, protective goggles, a face mask, long-sleeved clothing, and boots while handling the concentrated product and setting up irrigation/drenching equipment.
Handling Restrictions: Do not eat, drink, smoke, or chew tobacco during mixing or application. Avoid direct skin and eye contact.
Post-Application Hygiene: Wash hands, face, and all exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water immediately after work. Launder contaminated work clothes separately.
Environmental Protection: The product is toxic to aquatic life. Ensure that chemical runoff or drainage from treated fields does not contaminate natural water bodies, streams, or ponds.
Storage: Keep the product tightly sealed in its original container in a cool, dry, locked storage facility away from food items, animal feed, and completely out of reach of children and livestock.
